Why I Built The Academy

What Do You Actually Do?

A casual question from someone who cared hit harder than any performance review I’d ever had.

“What do you actually do?”

I paused. Scrambled. Because deep down, I didn’t know how to answer with conviction.

Yes, I’d been successful:

📌 Award-winning sales exec at Xerox during two major market transitions — from black-and-white to colour, and analog to digital.

📌 Handpicked as Tony Robbins Master Coach across 12 countries in APAC.

📌 Coach to Harvard MBAs and mentor to Leeds School of Business undergrads.

📌 Granted a U.S. Green Card as one of the top 1% of global sales leaders.

But I’d hit a point where I felt out of alignment. The work looked good on paper, but I wasn’t feeling it in my bones.

I was clear on what I didn’t want. But I hadn’t claimed what I truly did want.

So I did the work. I looked for the throughline. I reconnected with the part of me that lit up. That aligned my gifts, experience, and joy.

And it led me here: To transforming how hands-on CEOs, sales leaders and aspiring sales leaders lead. To helping them scale their influence, multiply their impact, and commercialise their expertise.

And as I shifted, I realized something: I wasn’t alone.

How do I lead with more impact –  and who do I trust to help me?

How do I position myself as a leader of influence – inside my company and beyond?

What’s next for me in this role – and do I even want it?

…were the same ones my clients were quietly wrestling with, too

Where It Really Began

Bernadette McClelland Chief Influence Officer of The Sales Leadership Academy focusses on StorySelling, Strategy, Sales Leadership Thought Leadership and Self Leadership

We’re shaped early. I always knew I didn’t fit the mould.

In secondary school, I wasn’t in the Academic stream (the ‘brainy’ ones), or the Commercial stream (the ‘clever’ ones), or the Home Economics stream (the ‘practical’ ones).

I was placed in “General.”

A bit from here. A bit from there. Not enough to be a teacher. Or an accountant. Or a Michelin Star chef. Just… general.

I was trained to fit the system. To not question it. But growth doesn’t come from compliance. So I started questioning. Started bucking the system.

That’s what makes me a misfit. That’s what makes me a great coach.

Years later, that “generalist” label followed me to Xerox. Our rookie sales team was called a “ragtag bunch of nitwits.” We became Australia’s #1 sales team.

Recently, an assessment described me as “unassuming.” At the time, it hurt. Now? I wear it.

Real. Ordinary. Unshakeable. That’s my edge. That’s my leadership.

And that’s what this Academy is built on.

It’s also why I’m not for everyone. Because I call it as I see it. And sometimes that’s what the world needs. But only those who are ready – ready to get real and start leading from who they really are.

Today, I do work that lights me up

I work with mid-level sales leaders, mostly men (so come on in, women), who are now asking bigger questions.

They’re under pressure to hold onto great people, hit numbers, project confidence – and lead through increasing unpredictability.

They’re expected to inspire others. But no one is inspiring them.

They’re responsible for growth. But they’re not sure how to grow themselves.

They’re scrolling LinkedIn, watching quietly, searching for someone who gets it.

Because they don’t want fluff. They want real. They want ordinary. Just like I do.

Who I Help (Because I've Been There)

Let me call these leaders out. Because these are my best clients:

The Manager – Who’s holding it together, but knows they’re reacting more than leading.

The Motivator – The heart of the team, but wondering if they’re growing or just going through the motions.

The Mentor – Their team sees their value. But it’s time the business did, too.

The Mobilizer -Who’s built trust and now wants to build traction across the business.

The Multiplier of Impact – They’re not chasing wins anymore – they’re building a system that lets others win because of them. At the top of this level, they start to codify their IP, commercialise their expertise, and become known for what they know.

If that’s you? You’re in the right place.

About the Sales Leadership Academy

From those early “General” labels to leading top-performing teams, I learned something powerful:

Leadership isn’t one-size-fits-all. But it does have a structure.

That structure lets you scale influence, protect your energy, and create pipeline certainty in a volatile market.

At the Academy, that structure is powered by two core philosophies:

1. Deliberate Disruption

Growth rarely happens by accident. Waiting for change to happen to you? That’s a gamble.

Deliberate Disruption is about leading from:

  • Identity — Who you are and how you show up.

  • Intention — The clarity behind every action.

  • Iteration — The measurable impact you create.

This mindset fuels the entire Sales Leader of Influence Method.

2. Energy First

Modern sales leadership needs two types of energy:

  • Creative Energy (Wisdom) People-centered, expansive, culture-building. Feminine.

  • Competitive Energy (Wealth) Strategic, results-driven, performance-focused. Masculine.

Most leaders lean too far into one. That costs them.

We teach you to lead from the tension point between both—what we call: The Gift of the Gap.

These energies get applied across three growth levels:

Sales Leadership –  How you lead others

Strategy & Story – How you scale outcomes with both energies!

Salespreneurship  – Because your team need to market, coach and sell!

This is your Sales Leadership Operating System- the engine that powers everything we do.

A Final Word

Whether you join us through a quick-win diagnostic, a self-led program, or the full Sales Leader of Influence Accelerator…

This system ensures your leadership is:

Visible – so it earns influence

Scalable – so it outlives the moment

Codified – so others can follow it

Commercial – so it creates real opportunity

Because leadership isn’t just about what you do. It’s about who you become – and the system that scales it.

If that sounds like you, welcome to the Academy. You already belong here.
